Soccer Drills and How to Play Soccer

At the Active Kids Soccer League, soccer drills are part of the learning process and a way to teach each player how to play soccer. Each drill is designed to instill confidence in the player of his/her abilities to control the action on the field.

Foot control is the primary lesson learned early on. Dribbling the ball down filed in a controlled manner is a basic move all players should be comfortable with.

Throw-Ins are another awkward soccer move that has to be learned correctly. Later on, each player will be expected to read the field and execute a proper throw-in to his/her teammates.

Passing the soccer ball to a teammate during game play is one of the most important soccer moves that can be done. Team play is a life lesson each child learns while playing soccer. Passing to a teammate builds on the notion that to help yourself you have to help others first.

Shooting the ball on goal is a one-on-one exercise that can be intimidating to children. Through many soccer drills developed to instill confidence, the prospect of going head-to-head with an opposing player gets easier. As is in life, sometimes you have to perform under pressure in order to accomplish something important. Learning these lessons early has far reaching benefits for every child.

Corner Kicks are a way of putting the ball in play after it has crossed the goal line of the defending team by the defending team. Offensive plays are centered around putting the ball in the net after the initial kick from the corner. Conversely, the defending team must prevent this with set plays of their own.

Free Kicks restart play the opposing team has broken a rule of the game.

Indirect Kicks are awarded when the foul was a normal foul that produced no dangerous play. A teammate has to touch the ball after the initial kick.

Direct Kicks are awarded where the foul was dangerous in nature. Goals can be awarded during direct kicks.
